Mission Statement: (See Web Site For Updated Information)
American Jewish World Service is an independent not-for-profit organization founded in 1985 to help alleviate poverty, hunger and disease among the people of the world regardless of race, religion or nationality. It breathes life into Judaism's imperative to pursue justice and helps American Jews to act upon a deeply felt obligation to improve the chances for survival, economic independence and human dignity for all people. AJWS works on behalf of the American Jewish community in partnership with local grassroots non-governmental organizations (NGOs) throughout the developing world, Russia, and the Ukraine addressing issues of education, community and civil society building, health care, agriculture reform, economic development, women, and HIV/AIDS. It funds its project partners, sends volunteers to work in these communities, and works throughout the American Jewish community to promote social justice from a Jewish perspective. AJWS provides assistance on a non-sectarian basis and does not proselytize. Our volunteers need to provide at least a one month time commitment. AJWS pays for the volunteer's airfare, their SOS evacuation insurance, and may, depending on the need, provide a modest cost-of-living stipend. We need at least three months advanced notice to arrange a volunteer placement.
